Geographic isolation

For generations, families living in Ilha do Goiabal have faced the challenges of geographic isolation

Spread across hundreds of islands and accessible only by boat, the community has had limited access to education and basic services, restricting opportunities for children and their families.

To help break this cycle, Trivium Foundation and Instituto Carnaúba launched a long term initiative in 2020 to create a place where education, wellbeing and community development could come together. The result is a community hub that continues to provide opportunities for children and families living in one of Brazil’s most remote regions.

Too many children were left behind

Before the project began, access to education was one of the community’s greatest challenges. Children often had to travel long distances by boat to attend school, making education difficult, expensive and unreliable.

Reaching education often meant travelling by boat across the islands.

Limited infrastructure struggled to meet the needs of a growing community.

Children learned in basic classrooms with limited resources.

Educational facilities were small and often overcrowded.

Community members came together despite limited facilities and opportunities.

Only 30% of children in the region had access to education. For many students, attending school required long journeys by boat, creating a significant barrier to regular attendance and learning.

Even when children were able to attend classes, educational resources and learning conditions remained limited. At the same time, heavy rainfall and seasonal flooding frequently disrupted daily life and made infrastructure development extremely challenging.

Before 2020, children in Ilha do Goiabal learned in basic facilities with limited resources. Reaching educational services was often challenging due to the community’s remote location and dependence on river transport.

Building more than a school

To address the barriers preventing children from accessing education, Trivium Foundation and Instituto Carnaúba partnered to create Agroescola Verde, a purpose built educational and community hub designed to serve Ilha do Goiabal and surrounding communities.

A place to learn. A place to grow.

Today, Agroescola Verde provides children with access to quality education, learning resources and a safe environment where they can develop their skills, build friendships and create new opportunities for the future.
