Challenges Facing the Colombian Amazon

In the Colombian Amazon, there are critical challenges related to deforestation and limited sustainable income generation. Agroforestry offers a viable solution. Keep reading to discover how.

The Colombian Amazon faces challenges of deforestation and limited sustainable income generation. Agricultural practices and the expansion of illicit crops have contributed significantly to deforestation in the Colombian Amazon. These activities lead to severe soil degradation, loss of biodiversity, and limited sustainable opportunities for local communities.

CHALLENGE

182% increase in illicit crops

IMPACT

70% of deforestation concentrated in the Amazon

CAUSE

Lack of viable sustainable economic alternatives

Agroforestry offers a viable solution by combining environmental regeneration with economic development

Agroforestry in Action

Implementing sustainable agroforestry systems is one the best ways to reforest the Amazon while supporting communities and preserving biodiversity. These systems help restore degraded lands, conserve biodiversity, and provide alternative income opportunities. By integrating açaí palms and native timber species, these systems are adapted to local conditions. Açaí palms are native to the Colombian Amazon, meaning they are already well-adapted to the environment. Thanks to these palms, it is possible to combine economic opportunities with ecological preservation.

Partnering for a Sustainable Amazon

The main purpose of this project is to improve economic stability, promote environmental regeneration, and conserve biodiversity. Together with Corpocampo NGO, we will distribute over 7,000 açaí seedlings and 1,800 native timber species. As a result of their biological structure and previous land uses, Amazonian soils are highly acidic. A robust fertilization plan is critical. Proper soil nutrition is essential to ensure the long-term success of these agroforestry systems. To support this, we will distribute 6,000 kg of organic fertilizer and 2,400 kg of lime.
Additionally, farmers will receive training on how to manage agroforestry systems efficiently. This is part of a biggest project supported by United Nation.

Agroforestry Project Impact

175 families will benefit from the project.

195 hectares will be reforested.

Over 96,000 VCUs will be sequestered.

56,000 kg of açaí will be sustainably harvested

Supporting this project helps restore degraded lands, help indigenous Amazonians to get a sustainable income, and protect the incredible biodiversity of the Colombian Amazon. Your contribution will offer resources for sustainable agroforestry systems, training for farmers, and tools for economic and environmental change. Every action counts—and together, we can grow a better future for people and nature.
